Monday’s Severe Weather

Monday looks to finally bring in out first taste of “true” spring storms. After a fairly quiet spring so far, it appears that Monday is going to be your typical severe weather set-up for Oklahoma.

With most of Oklahoma located in the “warm sector” of the storm system, we’ll likely see our temperatures quickly increase into the 80s which will be putting us close to the temperature necessary for convection. And, with the amount of instability in the atmosphere this time of year, it won’t take much for these storms to quickly go severe. Thus, the chance for severe storms will be located here:

Most of Oklahoma will see the chance for severe storms during the early afternoon hours on Monday with the primary hazards being large hail, tornadoes and damaging winds.

Any storm that does get going will have to capability of all the above. While reading the latest discussion that came out of The Storm Prediction Center, they included a line that you don’t see very often. And that was this: Thus, we’ll be watching very closely.

" MONDAY STILL HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE AN ACTIVE WEATHER DAY WITH
STRONG TORNADOES AND VERY LARGE HAIL POSSIBLE...PARTICULARLY OVER
CNTRL/SCNTRL KS AND EXTREME NWRN/NCNTRL OK"

  1. How do the conditions Monday compare to those of May 3, 1999? Are we looking at a similar situation with a risk of a large, damaging tornado in the OKC area?

  2. this reminds me a bit of may 8, 2003 f4 tornado that came through the metro. all the stuff was supposed to be to the north and all of the sudden, a storm developed southwest of the metro and went nuts. we will see how this turns out.
