How Much Can A Rain Gauge Hold?

Many of us probably have a rain gauge in our backyard. I think I did at one point where it was just a slender “rain holder”. I would have to empty it on a daily basis just to keep it accurate. So, how do we know that the reports we are getting are indeed accurate and that the gauges are not overflowing? All of these reports are coming in from a rain gauge known as a “tipping gauge” where there is a sensor that will record the rain, then the gauge will empty. We could have 100 inches of rain in a day and the rain gauge here would never “overflow”.  So, these reports are very accurate that are coming in.
