Drought Has Returned To Oklahoma

Despite wet weather through parts of Spring and early Summer, Oklahoma finds itself in a developing drought.  The main areas of concern are southern and eastern Oklahoma where a moderate drought exists.  Many of these areas have had very little rain since early July.  Take a look:

If you think this drought has developed rather quickly, you’re right.  In fact the suddenness of the onset of this drought has led to the term “flash drought”.  Much the way a flash flood can affect an area in a short amount of time, a flash drought can develop in a matter of several weeks.  So what does a moderate drought mean?  There are four levels of drought:

Thankfully, a moderate drought is the lowest level of drought.  Hopefully we’ll see some rain in the coming weeks.  September into October are a secondary wet season in Oklahoma, so keep your fingers crossed that we can put a dent in these dry conditions.
