Winter Gardening in Oklahoma

The grass is getting brown now, but that doesn’t mean that your home has to look brown like the landscape. Despite the name being one that shows weakness, Pansies are actually the ideal flower right now for winter gardening in Oklahoma. The picture above was taken in front of my home, during the winter after 2 feet of shoveled snow was tossed on top of them, followed by a huge freeze! And yet, when the snow melted, the flowers bloomed like crazy!

So, if the cold mornings are killing off your flower garden, then don’t think you have to stare at dirt for the next few months. Winter pansies are very tolerant of the cold and while they can’t take full sun in the summer, they can tolerate it during the winter months. The colder the temperature, the happier your pansies will be.  So, hurry up… plant ’em soon and enjoy the fact that your home may be the envy of your neighbors.
