Quiet Now, But Pattern May Shift Into High Gear Soon

We’ve been enjoying a pretty nice stretch of weather over the last eight days with temperatures running well above normal.  The overall jet stream pattern looks like it is going to shift into a more stormy pattern for Oklahoma beginning later in the week.

A cold front is going to move through Oklahoma late tonight.  It will cool our temperatures back into the 50s for highs tomorrow, but rain chances are slim to none in central and western parts of the state.  Temperatures will return to the 60s and 70s by Wednesday in advance of the next front that will arrive on Thursday.

The Thursday front is part of a rather complicated pattern that could bring severe weather to central and eastern Oklahoma and points east.  Here is the severe weather risk for Thursday:

It would not surprise me if the main threat ends up being east of OKC, deeper into eastern Oklahoma, but it’s still early and the details will change as we go through the week.  It’s possible that there could be a significant severe weather episode somewhere from the southern Plains, east through the Mississippi river valley.

Following Thursday’s front, other storm systems will target Oklahoma on or around Monday the 28th, and another one on Thursday, March 3rd.

This is the beginning of a volatile time of the year in weather.  The pattern is still dominated by cold intrusions from the north, but spring is also trying to take hold, and a battle ground takes shape.
