Drought…Getting Stronger Every Day

Despite the spotty thunderstorms that have popped up in Oklahoma the past few days, the drought is getting worse. The latest information confirms that the most severe drought conditions are spreading east across Oklahoma.  Here is the latest map showing how Oklahoma is being affected by the different degrees of drought:

The darkest red color represents that part of the state that is in exceptional drought, the worst category of drought.  The last few weeks have shown the exceptional drought spreading east, now including parts of central Oklahoma.

To put this in perspective, just one year ago, only 10% of the state was considered to be in a moderate drought.  Now, over 90% of Oklahoma is in a moderate drought, with over 40% in an exceptional drought.

At this point in the year, our best hope for some drought-busting moisture would be a tropical system to move into the southern Plains to give us a good soaking.  Of course the danger with that is you can go from drought to flooding in a matter of days.  The hurricane season is still quite young, so we may have some tropical opportunities in our future.  Other than that, mostly dry and hot weather will be the rule for the next seven to ten days….maybe longer.
